How To Live A Happy Life With Acid Reflux

Acid reflux relief starts with a good education. There are lots of medications and natural remedies for acid reflux. The more you know about the condition, the easier it will be to find treatment and relief.

Consuming any type of food during a reflux spell can make it worse. Most people eat too much, too quickly. However, you should not do this because this will only worsen your acid reflux. You want to stop eating when you’re full instead of when you’re stuffed. Additionally, slow down when you’re eating. Chew your food thoroughly and rest between bites.

If you stay at a weight that is healthy you will be unlikely to suffer from GERD. To thicken the mucuous lining of the stomach, try slippery elm. This lining forms a protective barrier against acid. A tablespoon or two mixed with a cup of water before bed will often provide some relief.

It pays to remain in an upright position for at least two hours following a meal. Your esophagus relaxes when you are lying down allowing stomach acids to rise. Standing or sitting up can help your esophagus.

Chew cinnamon gum after meals. Chewing gum helps to stimulate your saliva glands. This helps neutralize stomach acid. Additionally, the constant swallowing during gum chewing will help to clear the esophagus of lingering acid. Fruit gum can be used too. Minty gums should be avoided; they relax the esophagus’ sphincter, worsening acid reflux.

Use an additional pillow to support your head. You can raise your bed with bricks or wood blocks. Ideally, your head should be elevated six full inches higher than your feet. This keeps acid in your stomach where it belongs.

Avoid overly restrictive clothing. Belts, pantyhose or waistbands that are too tight can cause problems. Wearing clothes that are too tight can put a lot of pressure on your abdomen. As a result, acid reflux can occur. Make sure that your stomach is not constricted by your clothing.
